A piece of cloth is not designed to dissipate heat, nor does human flesh. On a lap? There is no air between the lap and the bottom plate. And I don't think I need to explain you how convection works, right? (how hot-and-cold air interacts and all of that shit, grade school stuff basically). On a desk, air can take away heats so much so that the bottom plate can maintain ~46C. After that, it's transferred to the bottom plate via that thermal pad. That heat is transferred to the internal aluminium heatsink. Now, the M1 can produce heats until it heats up to 90C. So I even seriously doubt it can take heat out to below ~36C, because the other side of the fabric (the thigh) it's also ~36C. And the point of piece of cloth is to keep a human warm. Even with a pair of pants, I seriously doubt it can dissipate heat as fast as the M1 SoC outputs. Unlike that metal part above the keyboard, the bottom plate in normal usecase can be placed on a human lap, regardless naked or clothed. Third, we back discussing the bottom plate. that metal part can dissipate any excess heat so it can maintain 45C. Second, that 45C metal is exposed to the air where the heat can easily dissipate, and can maintain that 45C, i.e. Yes, my finger is on the keyboard (those plastic caps) and my palm is at the palm rest below it, but never have I put or rest my finger on that metal part (and I believe no human being capable of operating a notebook computer do that). First, you're 100% incorrect because the 45C is not on the keyboard but only happens on the metal part above the keyboard and around the keycaps.
